MUSLIM COMMUNITY RAISE £90,000 FOR HELIPAD APPEAL

Written by on July 10, 2019

A fundraising dinner for the Luton & Dunstable Hospital Helipad Appeal raised £90,000 last week after the Muslim community threw their support behind the campaign.

The local mosques, along with the Discover Islam Centre and community media organisation Inspire FM, have all played a role in a series of fundraising drives run recently.

Luton mayor Tahir Malik, Luton Borough Council chief executive Robin Porter and outgoing Bedfordshire Police chief constable Jon Boutcher joined other guests on the evening in support of the appeal.

The Pakistan High Commission was also represented on the evening, by Dildar Ali Abro, the First Secretary of the High Commissioner.

Sarah Amexheta, Head of Charity for the Luton & Dunstable Hospital Trust, said: “We are immensely grateful to the Muslim community for coming together to raise funds to save lives.

“Every second and every penny counts in this appeal. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported. Please continue to spread the word and get others involved.”

Rehana Faisal, of the Luton Sunni Council of Mosques, said: “The appeal supports a much-needed initiative and we are pleased that we’re able to support the Luton & Dunstable Hospital in this way.”

Abdul Ghafoor, of the Luton Council of Mosques, said: “Supporting local causes, such as the Luton & Dunstable Hospital, is an important aspect of the work that our mosques do to serve our communities. We were pleased to be a part of this worthwhile initiative.”

Sufian Sadiq, of Discover Islam Luton, said: “The Muslim community in the town is very committed to supporting important causes. The new helipad will provide medical teams with faster access to patients needing timely care.”

The campaign is supporting the wider fundraising drive by the hospital of reaching the £1.5 million target for a much-needed helipad.

It is hoped that it is operational by summer 2021.
