Glossary of Terms

Zakat
One of the five pillars of Islam and an obligation, the literal translation of the Arabic word is "to cleanse" or "purify". Paying Zakat on your wealth purifies and increases the remainder of it, also serving as a reminder that everything we own belongs to Allah.
Sadaqa
General term for optional charity given purely for the pleasure of Allah. Any amount can be given at any time of the year.
Fitrana
Every adult Muslim must pay Zakat-ul-Fitr for themselves and every person they are responsible for, any time in Ramadhan, but before the Eid prayer. Zakat-ul-Fitr is paid for those in need and equals to one person's daily meals, currently set at £3 - £4.
Lillah
meaning 'for Allah', comprises any form of charity given in the cause of Allah on a purely voluntary basis. This charitable giving is over and above the Zakah that one is liable for. Zakah can only be spent directly on the poor (money in hand) and not on such projects as construction whereas Lillah can be utilised in constructing masajid, digging wells, etc. Zakah money cannot be used for such projects.
